During last week's Board of Supervisors Meeting, Maria Razo, executive director of San Bernardino County’s Housing Authority, provided a presentation on many of the department’s services and partnerships.

One of their recent success stories centers around Michael, a professional painter who once worked on bridges and highway projects.

“After losing his job, Michael became homeless and lived outdoors for many years in the extreme heat and cold of the High Desert. He said he felt like a Caveman,” said Razo. “With the help of partners including Department of Behavioral Health and Valley Star, Michael moved into his new home at Desert Haven Apartments in September 2021. He was excited that his apartment had air conditioning, and that he would have a refrigerator — things that we take for granted.”

Since 1941, San Bernardino County’s Housing Authority has assisted families with supportive housing, affordable rental housing and subsidized homeownership. Its supportive housing program, which includes 31 units at Desert Haven in Victorville, serves up to 88 households.
