Deputies Honored with 'Sheriff's Medal for Life Saving' Following Newberry Springs Incident
February 24, 2021
Congratulations to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputies Patrick Guthaus and Walter Kazee, who were awarded the “Sheriff’s Medal for Life Saving" for their brave actions during a domestic disturbance call in Newberry Springs.
During the call on August 10, 2020, fellow Barstow Sheriff's Station Deputy Jay Ko was ambushed by an assailant armed with a machete. Deputies Guthaus and Kazee quickly came to Ko's aid, taking the assailant into custody and then rendering medical aid to Deputy Ko, who was losing a significant amount of blood. The deputies were able to stabilize Ko's condition until medical aid arrived.
Thank you, Deputies, for your quick thinking and bravery during this very dangerous call.
